Hi Natick USY, How is everybody doing? I hope everyone is starting school with no or little difficulties. How did everyone’s holidays go? In the news: The Israeli government has made a committee who wants to develop more of the Negev and are looking to pay people from certain professions. For anyone who has a job as a; soldier, doctor, teacher, or engineer then the Israeli government will pay between NIS(new Israeli shekel) 500 – 1,500 per month, to help those get started with living. There is also plans to possibly build a new IDF training base down in the Negev as well. They also want to put aside NIS 30-million for helping people in Haifa. Two companies in will be building a sukkah completely out of candy for Sukkot in Jerusalem’s Safra Square. The sukkah will use two tons of candy and will be 1,000 square meters. The walls will be made with bubblegum and hard candies, and the lighting will be shaped like candies. They will be naming the sukkah “HaSukkah-Rya” which means hard candy. The Antiquities Authority announced that archaeologists have an old quarry which is from the time of King Herod. And they found evidence that King Herod’s workers may have chiseled the giant stones used for the building of the Second Temple, around 2,000 years ago. Experts believe that stones as big as eight meters long were extracted from the quarry. These stones would then be dragged by ox over to the Jerusalem for the building of the Temple. They found the quarry while digging in Jerusalem to start the build of a new school. To confirm the date that the quarry was used, the archaeologists found coins as well as parts of pottery around the site. This month in History: The Yom-Kippur of 1973, was the famous Yom-Kippur War. This war came as a surprise to the Israelis. At around 2:00pm the Egyptians and the Syrians planed to attack Israel with hope to wipe Israel off the map. They knew that the majority of the Israelis would be in shul at the time praying. Despite catching the Israelis off guard, the Egyptians and Syrian plans failed to work. By the end of the war Israel was able to not only recapture the Golan back from Syria, as well as taking full control of the Sinai from Egypt. Once the war was over Israel had tripled it size in a matter of days. - Benzi Miller
