Israel Awareness Update December 5, 2001 By: Yoni Merola, Natick USY Programming VP Jews around the world are in sorrow because of the recent attacks Israel received these past few days. Tuesday morning, tragedy continued as a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up in a hotel in Jerusalem. Although there were no fatalities, 11 people were wounded from the attack. Because of this, Arafat requested 12 hours to make the proper arrests for this attack and Sharon granted him this. Israeli officials are now trying to strip Arafat of his honorable position as a leader, and return him to his previous status of a leader of a wide spread terrorist organization. The tolerance level in the Kenesset has run low and Israel is getting ready to take serious action. With the US a firm supporter, Israel should be able to complete what is necessary to make the country a safe and stable place for all Jews to come from all over the world and not to have them be afraid of violent attacks. In other news the announcement last week that an American company was experimenting to create cloned human embryos sparked an uproar in the US. However, Israel has a far more liberal point of view on the issue. Efforts are being made to move the clone research program to Israel if all else fails in the US. This will prove to be an excellent scientific advancement and could affect almost all areas of medicine. Finally, it is my hope that you continue to be informed about the occurrences in Israel.
