Israel Awareness Update March 14, 2002 By: Yoni Merola, Natick USY Programming VP For the past few weeks violence continues to occur in Israel. The fight between Israelis and Palestinians are heating up and some kind of resolution or outside force is bound to intervene any day now. Today, 3 soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip in a landmine explosion and many deaths such as this incident have occurred this whole week. As Israel continues to fight back, the Arab settlement of Ramallah remains obliterated. Both Jews and Palestinians are scared for their lives. In Ramallah, there is no water, food, and all the roads are chewed up by tank tracks. For those of you that don't know Ramallah is the primary Arab settlement in the West Bank. With President George W. Bush offering his harshest criticism yet of Israel's operations in Ramallah, US special envoy Anthony Zinni left for Israel yesterday for an open-ended mission aimed at securing an Israeli-Palestinian cease-fire, a week after Bush announced his decision to renew Zinni's peacemaking mission. "Fr! ankly, it is not helpful what the Israelis have recently done," Bush said. "I understand somebody trying to defend themselves... but the recent actions are not helpful." As Bush continues to take drastic steps to end this crisis, the turmoil in the Jewish Nation continues. Let us hope that peace is near.
