Israel Awareness Update January 7, 2002 By: Yoni Merola, Natick USY Programming VP For the past few weeks much has been going on in Israel as the hostility between the Israelis and Palestinians continues. Just yesterday, the Prime Minister of Israel called Yasser Arafat his "bitter enemy" because of his recent intereception of a ship containing 50 tons of weapons of mass destruction bound from Iran. It seems that peace talks are far away from occuring in the near future. In other news, heavy snow fell on Mount Hermon and parts of the Golan yesterday and is expected to reach Jerusalem and Galilee peaks this morning. It is uncertain how much snow might accumulate in the capital, and municipal officials advised residents to listen to news broadcasts from 6:00 a.m. on to learn whether or not schools will be open. This is certainly a rare treat for most Israelis. Finally, the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team remained unbeaten, strolling to a 92-79 win over Givat Shmuel last night in Or Yehuda. Givat Shmuel had no answer against the stronger Tel Aviv side, which responded well to the scolding they received from coach David Blatt after their poor performance in beating Kiryat Ata last week. Now the Israeli champions can prepare confidently for their Euroleague match in Spain against Malaga on Thursday.
